If you are reading this blog-I assume you follow my cooking account (if you don’t you should follow). And if you follow my cooking account, you know how much I love protein, there are a few reasons why.
- Muscle growth. Yes workouts matter to build muscle, but what is going to show that muscle definition? PROTEIN BABY. You don’t need to eat 100g a day-but my motto is at least 20g of protein per meal.
- Satiety. Do you ever eat a big ol bowl of pasta and then 5 minutes later you are hungry again? Yup. Been there. It’s that weird feeling of being full yet hungry all at once. Protein has this magical way of making each meal satisfying. Next time your meal is just mostly a plain bowl of carbs. Add a good source of protein, I promise you will walk away feeling energized and full for hours.
- Blood Sugar. Breakfast may not be the most important meal for everyone but it sure is hell is for me. I notice that whenever I have a small carb filled breakfast (IE plain oatmeal, a pastry, toast with peanut butter) I am way hungrier later in the day, and my blood sugar levels are crazy. The fix: protein. Try making sure your breakfast especially has around 20g of protein and see how different you feel throughout the day.
- It gets rid of the yogurt ick. Are you ever eating yogurt and then…oh no… all too suddenly you start to realize you are eating yogurt???? Mix that yogurt in with protein powder. Gives it a different texture and flavor, almost like frosting!
Lots of other benefits. (Huberman Lab has lots of great episodes on this, Abbey Sharp and Shyla Cadogan also have lots of great info as well!) So since I have become quite a bit protein obsessed, I have had my fair share of protein powders. Good and bad. So here is my ranking. I will be judging each on taste, quality, and price. So you can hopefully make the best decision for your needs, wants, and desires.
Enjoy.

Taste: Amazing. It quite literally does not get better than this. All three flavors are so good. I am legit drinking a milkshake when I have this.
Quality: Also does not get better than this: grass fed pasture raised cows, hemp protein, collagen, sweetened with monk fruit and stevia, and drum roll. COLOSTRUM. Gimmie it all.
Price: Sad face memoji enter here. BUT hear me out. Ok $67 per bag-a bit pricier but not too much more expensive than any other protein powder. Sigh, shipping. Price raises to $87 dollars… dang it. So yes, it is expensive! But here are my justifications for its price:
-Small family farm treating animals really well
-Taste is amazing
-Bag is bigger than most protein powders and each scoop is 24g so more bang for your buck.
-Extra ingredients that add that boost!
When you add all of that up I think 87 dollars is actually a justified price, up to you if you can or are willing to spend almost 100 dollars on protein (when my paycheck allows… I am hahahahahahaha.)
Taste: Yummy and delicious! Smooth creamy yum yum yum! LOVE IT.
Quality: LOVEEEE. Grass fed, third party tested, has collagen, and hemp protein! Honestly the quality is pretty similar to Ballerina Farm! And offering 22g of protein per scoop!!
Price: Yup a bit cheaper! Pretty average price for any protein powder. I think this is the closest you will get to Ballerina Farm. Also sold at Sprouts and on Amazon.
Taste: Delicious affffff similar to Just. Love it and it tastes sooooo good.
Quality: Third party tested. Such simple ingredients, love the addition of coconut sugar, free range grass fed cows. They also have vegan protein! Can’t say I have tried but have heard amazing things!
Price: About the same as Just Ingredients! Sold on Amazon.
Taste: Ok… so I actually have not tried this one, but reviews are amazing and Goat Milk??? You have me sold! (reviews say it tastes really good!!!!)
Quality: Grass fed goats, A2 milk, 1 ingredient, 24 g of protein, third party tested. YOU HAVE ME SOLD! Also supporting a small family farm!!
Price: REALLY GOOD! Cheapest one yet and for quality…. SIGN ME UP. Sold on Amazon
Ok that concludes my milk based proteins now moving onto some vegan proteins! Which I absolutely love! Just an FYI, all plant based proteins will naturally be more chalky, most of them are made out of peas and hemp, so it’s kind of just the way the cookie crumbles, a good plant based protein will still be creamy!!!
Taste: Super solid! I loveeeee their vanilla chai! So so yummy!
Quality: Such simple ingredients and third party tested! Love to see it.
Price: Pretty average. Sold at lots of grocery stores and on Amazon too
Taste: LOVE THIS ONE. Honestly, one of my favorite plant based proteins. The vanilla flavor is just divine.
Quality: Third party tested, smaller business, high quality. Bonus points for including prebiotic fiber in it from baobab and artichoke root. So good!
Price: Average, good bang for your buck. Also sold at lots of grocery stores and Amazon
Taste: I love it! Now some people say it will taste a bit gummy but I don’t notice it and I like how thick it makes my smoothies and oatmeal. If you are not a fan of super thick things this one may not be the one for you, but it’s the least chalky out of all the plant proteins.
Quality: Love what this brand stands for (great supplement brand in general and women owned!!!!) Third party tested woop woop! Only thing that I don’t love is that it has guar gum in it-but just my preference!
Price: A bit pricier than the other two-but nothing crazy! Also sold on Amazon
Would love to hear if you have any fav proteins! If a protein powder was not mentioned and you are curious about it, my advice is to make sure the brand is third party tested (to ensure there are no heavy metals or anything, supplements aren't regulated by the FDA). And the ingredient list should be simple!!! Protein powders should taste yummy and NOT make your stomach hurt.
