How to Tap into Your Fitness Journey as a College Student

I don’t remember a time where movement wasn’t a part of my everyday life, as soon as I popped out of the womb I was attached to my mom at the hip as she went on her walks and runs with her girlfriends. At the age of three I was working out with her as she trained her clients at the Rose Bowl. As I grew I hopped from sport to sport: dance, lacrosse, tennis, gymnastics, and eventually back to dance. As I moved into college I began to discover other activities like rock climbing, surfing,  open gym etc. And whether I am moving my body through weight training, pilates, yoga, one of these activities, or a leisurely walk, I have concluded that in order for me to remain sane-I must move every day. Somehow, someway.

My friend Rena sent a link to the group chat a few months back, it was tickets to the Okee Dokee Brothers as they were going to be playing at our school in April. Because we get to go to a lot of these events for free (thank you ArtPower), we decided to go.

Everyone in life experiences hard things. Sometimes-when I listen to what others have gone through,it’s hard for me to comprehend how we all choose to get up again and again when life can be so, damn, hard.

The Flowers

A fog sets over the San Gabriel mountains at 7am. Although the high is set to 75 degrees and sunny later in the day, for the first few hours of the early morning-Altadena will remain at a cool 45-55 degrees. Colder than any other area of LA.

Altadena

My favorite thing to do in Altadena was long walks around the mountainous neighborhood. In quarantine I would dedicate an hour of my mornings to take my dog shadow on long walks while I listened to a podcast. When friends slept over we would take night walks to Farnsworth park or walk down Christmas Tree Lane during the holidays. When I come home from school for break I tend to walk with my family for hours as we catch up and talk of future travel plans. I never got sick of my little neighborhood walks.
